"Common Bacterial Diseases of Koi"

This course is open to any Koi Keeper who desires to increase their knowledge and understanding of bacterial disease in Koi. It is recommended that those enrolling in this course are not only competant in the use of a microscope but also have some knowledge of bacterial problems in Koi. This is an advanced-level course.


Course Description:

As a Koi keeper you encounter disease problems. Some of these problems are caused by pathogenic bacteria. This course will address bacteria in general, and the common pathogens of Koi in particular in order to assist you in the often difficult challenge of keeping Koi free of bacterial disease. The course CD includes animations and movies which are both very helpful in understanding the material presented.

Bacteria and how to work with them

Common bacterial diseases of Koi

Using gram stain procedures

Treatment options

Preventive medicine

Required Materials:

All students will need an email address and internet access to the K.O.I. Common Bacterial Diseases of Koi forum. The course CD works on both PC and MAC. It is designed to be viewed at screen resolutions of 1024 x 768 or higher.

Some assignments require you to use your microscope (oil immersion is preferable). You will need to own, or have access to a microscope. You will want to get a bacterial stain kit (e.g. Gram's stain, methylene blue, a Wright's preparation) if you don't have one. Suggested sites to obtain supplies are: Connecticut Valley Biological product #ST 525A or Auspex Scientific # APGS100. At these sites, you will also find the nutrient agar plates and inoculating loops which you will need.
